RICKY CARMICHAEL WINS THIRD AMA ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD
RC stacks award number three.
Ricky Carmichael swooped his third Athlete of the Year award last Sunday night at the year-end AMA Pro Racing Awards banquet, held in Las Vegas. Ricky is now tied with Scott Parker as the only three-time winner of the most prestigious award in AMA Pro Racing. He previously won in 2001 and 2002, and has been nominated for the award a total of five times.
The award capped a triumphant year for Ricky, who returned to racing in May after going through major knee surgery during the off-season. No one was sure how strong the DC moto team rider would be, as he not only was returning from an injury that had ended many riders' careers, but was also riding a four-stroke motorcycle for the first time in his career. Carmichael crushed any doubts as he repeated his remarkable 2002 feat of going the entire Motocross season without a defeat—a perfect 24-for-24 moto wins in the 12-event championship.
Ricky was in Las Vegas to accept the award, taking a short break from testing with Team Suzuki. His next race will be the THQ World Supercross GP rounds in Canada in early December.
